Chapter Twenty

Leave ‘em alone and they’ll come home

Wherein Jack has a few suggestions and our heroes return home

Virginia had been kind enough to loan her a few of her clothes she had around the castle.  They were a bit small, but she wouldn’t stick out in the New York crowds like she would have in any of her other clothes.

Breakfast was waiting when she finally joined the others in the sitting room.  Julian had a plate piled with food for her, lots of food.  She pecked his cheek and dug into the food.

Virginia, Wolf and Tony showed up just as breakfast was being efficiently whisked away and they all trooped down hallways to the room holding the magic mirrors.

Wendell joined them just as they were entering the room, “I thought I’d see you all off.  Plus,” he confided in them once they were out of the hallway, “I do so like watching the mirror turn on.”

Polite smiles and no laughter meet his statement.  They tarried in the first room discussing schedules and times that the mirror would be open and available for them to use.  Finally settling on an agreeable schedule they moved into the next room where the mirrors were standing.

Glancing around the room Jack frowned at the several covered mirrors in a circle with the uncovered traveling mirror, “This is where you keep it?  There was hardly any security.  Anyone could just waltz in or out of this room.”

Wendell seemed a bit taken aback at this criticism though Sydney had to agree with her father.  It had been simplicity itself when she and Julian had first broken into the room.  She spoke up gently, “It was fairly effortless for me and Julian to get in here the first time.”

Wendell frowned at the mirror in thought.

“You could always put it in the dungeon,” Virginia piped in.

Jack seized on the idea, “That would be ideal, if you have individual cells.”  At Wendell’s hesitant nod he went on, “Lock the mirror in one of the cells with several guards posted outside of it.  Then you can better control who gets in and who comes out.  The mirror will be left opened for some time during the periods we’ve allotted for visits; you wouldn’t want someone to wander through and into your castle.”

“Very good point,” Wendell thoughtfully nodded, “I shall take that into due consideration.”

Virginia stepped up and turned the small disc on the frame, the mirror jumping to life, New York City and Central Park flashing dizzily in its frame.  Once the image had settled onto a secluded, wooded area Virginia hugged Sydney, “See you in about a month.”

“Okay,” she hugged the other woman back, “We’ll have to show you the house.”

Julian coughed.

“Once we have it fixed up a bit,” she amended.

Virginia gave her a sly smile and stepped back.  There was a round of goodbyes and finally they stepped through the mirror.
