Prologue

Moral Decisions and Questionable Circumstances

Wherein the title says it all

Sydney sat in her currently empty apartment and regarded the email program in front of her.  A message sat on the screen waiting for her to press enter and send the encrypted email.  Adjusting her legs from her cramped, crossed-legged position on the floor she sipped at her wine glass and drummed the fingers of her left hand on the coffee table.

A soft, light green glow reflected from her middle finger as she moved her fingers.  Smiling she set the wine glass down and admired the ring.  She’d waited a whole, agonizing week after her return, not even wearing it at home, before she put the ring back on, fitting it as easily on her middle finger as on her ring finger.  When Francie noticed it she told her friend that the bank had given her a bonus after the unexpected delay during the last trip and she had decided to splurge a little.  Francie had whole hearted agreed and had admired the peridot ring.

She winced when she again thought of how close she’d come to losing her friend if her dad hadn’t received that anonymous tip.  She had a good suspicion as to who had sent that tip.  She returned her gaze to the screen and her hand hovered over the enter key.

Ready to be sent to the encrypted email address Julian had given her before they parted ways in New York were careful instructions on how to break into the low-security facility that the Rambaldi mirror going to be sent to.  After Analysis found nothing of interest on the mirror, except for the crudely carved eye of Rambaldi on the back, they had deemed the mirror unimportant enough, despite the Rambaldi eye, that they were sending it to their low-security facility.  She knew he wouldn’t hand the mirror over to her mother or Sloane, but the temptation to help himself to the other objects stored at the facility might be more than he could resist.

Glancing at the ring again she was reminded, as she always was when she looked at the ring, of her time spent in the other world.  Firmly she pressed the enter key and watched as the message was sent.

Noting the time she hurriedly gathered up her things and rushed to get dressed.  She was supposed to be meeting Francie at her restaurant then they were going out.  With both of them single, she herself freshly broken up with Vaughn, Francie had insisted on a girl’s night out.  Before leaving the apartment she waited impatiently for the email program to come up, no new emails.  Disappointed she shut down the laptop and left the apartment.
